The trommel drums had split on the drive plates, after welding they had continually cracked and therefore were deemed not fit for purpose and had to be replaced. The two Trommels were in such a position that the roof of the building had to be taken off along with all the supporting steelwork to enable the drums to be removed by mobile crane. To enable the plant to keep running there had to be a removable panel made to close the hole in the roof to prevent odours escaping.
Once the roof steelwork was removed the main trommel covers were then removed to allow the drums to be lifted out. The crane used for the lift was a 250tonne mobile crane.
