New Cement Storage Silo for Monier Lifetile

Following several successful projects Wright Engineering have completed a new installation for Monier Lifetile in the USA. This new project called for the design and manufacture of a 12 ton cement silo and screw conveyor for their roof tiling manufacturing plant at Kansas City.

Wright Engineering supplied a 12 ton capacity silo of welded carbon steel construction. Structurally designed for +/- 20” W.C, the silo is 6’0” diameter x 8’0” straight wall, 70° cone, 7’6” deep with a 6” outlet flange. Supported by cross braced steel legs the silo is complete with high and low level indicator openings, a reinforced flat top with roof stiffeners, vacuum relief man way and bin vent filter flange. Complying with the latest health and safety regulations an OHSA caged access ladder and top handrail with toe board completes the specification.

Also supplied was a silo fill line, consisting of 20 feet of 4” O.D. carbon fill tube, and a 32” square housed bin vent filter x 74” overall height which was supplied with a clean air outlet complete with weather hood and bird screen. A main safety grate at the base flange to prevent entry into the silo was also included. A 6” maintenance gate valve and a 6” rotary feed valve manufactured with a cast iron housing and end plates and a carbon steel rotor was also included. This valve is set to feed 200 lbs of cement in three minutes based a bulk density of 85 lbs/cu ft.

As part of the project Wright also designed and manufactured a 10’ 00” long screw feed conveyor; powered by a geared motor drive this conveyor was constructed in carbon steel with a 6” diameter inlet and outlet. Two Babbitt capacitance style level indicators completed the material handling system.

All electrical engineering and a comprehensive set of controls were also designed and manufactured by Wright Engineering and included full documentation for the control panel, a complete set of electrical drawings comprising of schematics, one line power diagrams, system wiring diagrams, inner panel layout and wiring diagrams, door layout and wiring diagrams.

Whilst on site Wright Engineers also completed additional modifications to convert an existing unused cement silo to store and feed PFA (pulverized fly ash) as an additive to the line.

Wright Engineering has supplied Lafarge (previously Redland) with material handling equipment for over 20 years. In that period the personnel movement within the Lafarge Concrete roof tile organisation has resulted in their reputation for quality of equipment and reliable and timely installations being transposed to the USA. Monier Lifetile LLC is Lafarge’s joint venture with Boral in North America.
