Another Major HS2 Contract Award

Wright Engineering is delighted to announce that it has been awarded a third major contract by Align JV to perform works on the UK Government’s HS2 project.

Align JV is a main works contractor on the project and has been tasked to carry out the C1 package which includes the development of 21.6km of high-speed rail infrastructure.

The scope of work requires the installation of the world’s biggest Slurry Treatment Plant from fee issue materials. Indeed, a slurry tunnel boring machine will be used as part of the construction of the 10-mile Chiltern tunnels. Spoil from the front of the excavation chamber will be removed via a recirculation system and pumped back to the surface where it will be separated from the slurry at the plant.

Wright Engineering awarded multiple HS2 contracts

Wright Engineering is pleased to announce that it has been awarded two major contracts by Align JV to undertake works in connection with the UK Government’s widely publicised high-speed rail project, known as HS2.

Align JV is a joint venture between three international and privately owned infrastructure companies, namely Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine and Volkerfitzpatrick. Align JV is a Main Works Civils Contractor on the project having been awarded the contract to deliver the C1 package of HS2 – this consists of the development of 21.6km of high-speed rail infrastructure aimed at boosting connectivity between towns and cities.

The combined scope of works awarded by Align JV to Wright Engineering involves (i) the detailed design, manufacture, and installation of a grout compound, which is preparatory to the construction of the 10-mile-long Chiltern tunnels; and (ii) the installation of a closed loop water treatment plant to treat the excess water created by the tunnelling operations and batching plant along with the surface water from the south portal.

Wright Engineering welcomes Ryan Stevens

Wright Engineering is delighted to welcome Ryan Stevens who joins the company as a Sales Engineer.

The company’s recent agreement with German based company, Gurtec GmbH, to become the exclusive distributor of its products within the United Kingdom meant that it required a skilled sales professional to assist with increasing demand.

Wright Engineering received a considerable number of applications for the role, but Ryan’s vast sales experience and industry knowledge shone through during the interview process.

Becoming the exclusive distributor for Gurtec is a major win and from the outset, the company wants to make sure that it has the right people in place to ensure that this new venture is a success. Gurtec – Exclusive Distribution Agreement

Wright Engineering is delighted to announce that it has completed a multi-year agreement with German company, Gurtec GmbH, to become the exclusive distributor of its products within the United Kingdom.

Gurtec is historically renowned for the design and manufacture of high quality and reliable conveyor components that meet the performance needs of its clients. Indeed, it produces the best End Cap, Special and Reformed rollers available today and it continues to refine its existing product line whilst maintaining a firm commitment to conveyor component innovation.

Due to rapidly increasing demand for Gurtec products within the UK marketplace, Gurtec made a strategic decision to establish a local sales and technical support function.

Wright Engineering has a proven track record for design and engineering excellence and given that its client base consists of leading UK and international companies from across a number of industries, it presented an ideal opportunity for the companies to enter into a partnership.

Wright Engineering supports the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation

Wright Engineering is very proud to sponsor and provide continuing support to the ‘Darby Rimmer MND Foundation’.

This fantastic charity promotes awareness and funds research into curing motor neurone disease (‘MND’) and provides an emotional support network for individuals diagnosed with the illness.

MND is a neurological condition which affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord, resulting in devastating medical symptoms whilst leaving the mind unaffected. Approximately one third of all people diagnosed with MND will die within 2 years.

The foundation was established by former Liverpool, Bradford City and Bolton Wanderers footballer Stephen Darby and his close friend and British Forces Veteran Chris Rimmer, both of which are fighting the disease.

Between 17th and 19th May 2019, a team nicknamed the ‘Sherwood Rangers’ took part in the ‘Coast to Coast’ challenge, cycling over 136 miles from Workington to Tynemouth. Wright Engineering’s Paul Gibson delivered dedicated transport and logistic assistance to the cyclists using company vehicles and equipment. In total, the bike ride raised £25k which is an incredible achievement.

The team will undertake another coast to coast challenge later in the year called the Way of the Roses, which is a 170-mile route beginning in Morecombe and finishing in Bridlington. This fundraiser will again be supported by Wright Engineering and Paul Gibson and we wish all those involved a safe and successful journey.

Project Completion – Saint Gobain

Wright Engineering has completed an important, high-value contract on behalf of one of its major clients, Saint Gobain.

The scope of works required the replacement of end-of-life discharge ducting which formed part the forming fan, oven and furnace extraction system. This critical plant system is responsible for the removal and dissipation (via the main site stack) of all fumes from the aforementioned areas.

The design of the ducting was completed by Wright Engineering’s experienced in-house design team using the latest design software packages including Tekla 3D modelling. Upon commencement of the project, a 3D laser scan was taken to enable point cloud modelling of the existing ducting, which acted as a key point of reference when plotting and overlaying the new design.

Each section of the ducting was dealt with separately before joining the sections together to finalise the overall design. This process ensured that the design work was of the highest quality and done in accordance with all relevant standards and specifications.

Wright Engineering fabricated 70 tonnes of stainless-steel ducting and galvanised the supporting structural steelwork at its production facility, located in Worksop. The ducting and steelwork were subsequently installed by skilled company operatives during a 9-week shutdown period.

This project was led by Mr Pete Bussey (Senior Project Manager) who commented ‘I am pleased that this challenging, time sensitive project is now complete. Saint Gobain is delighted with the new ducting and how Wright Engineering conducted its operations at each stage of the contract. The team should be very proud of its efforts’.

Wright Engineering now has a number of contracts secured with Saint Gobain throughout 2020 and is looking forward to meeting the same high standards as demonstrated on this project.

Project Completion – Blue Phoenix Group

Wright Engineering is delighted to have completed a major project on behalf of the Blue Phoenix Group (previously known as Ballast Phoenix).

The Blue Phoenix Group is the leading IBA aggregate producer in the United Kingdom. The company operate several facilities that process over 1.5 million tonnes of IBA per annum, with the resulting aggregate product having a variety of uses within the construction industry.

In December 2018, the Blue Phoenix Group contracted with Wright Engineering to design, build, install and commission a state-of-the-art incinerator bottom ash processing plant at its Ferrybridge site. At the time, the value of the contract was the largest single order in Wright Engineering’s 30-year history.

The design of the processing plant was undertaken by Wright Engineering’s experienced in-house design team using the latest AutoCAD 2D and Tekla 3D modelling software. The design team adopted a collaborative approach, working closely with Blue Phoenix Group personnel to ensure that the plant design was meticulous and in accordance with project requirements.

The scope of works was extensive and included the fabrication (at Wright Engineering’s production facilities) and installation of conveyors, material separators, an intake hopper and over 110-tonnes of execution class 2 structural steelwork along with the integration of feeders, over-band magnets, an impactor, a trommel, a screen, dust filters, non-ferrous separators and a crusher.

Finally, Wright Engineering was tasked with the design, supply and installation of the plant control system and all field wiring. This portion of the works was managed by its electrical services division and completed in partnership with a nominated electrical contractor that had worked on similar projects for the Blue Phoenix Group.

As with any project of this size and complexity, certain works were challenging, particularly the lifting and installation of a 13-tonne trommel and a 17-tonne screen, the latter requiring the design and fabrication by Wright Engineering of bespoke spreader beams due to the limited on-site space.

Now complete, the plant can process over 300,000 tonnes of IBA per annum, organises the aggregate into size fractions according to customer specification and removes ferrous and non- ferrous metals which are sent for further re-processing and reuse.

There has been some exceptional and resourceful engineering work along the way.

The completion of this project further showcases that Wright Engineering has the requisite skill, experience and planning capabilities to be able to deliver on complex, high-value projects for its clients.

Mark Dove Joins the Design Team

Wright Engineering would like to welcome Mark Dove to the company. Mark joins the Design Office as Draughtsperson.

Mark has worked within the structural steelwork Industry for over 10 years and has very quickly integrated into the existing team.

Carbon8 Container

Wright Engineering is delighted to have successfully completed its latest project on behalf of Carbon8 Systems.

Carbon8 has developed an award-winning process called Accelerated Carbonation Technology which can treat a broad range of industrial by-products and residues. The process has a number of advantages including the capture of CO2 thereby preserving the environment, rapid treatment where the waste has been generated and the creation of a manufactured aggregate and mineral rich fertiliser.

Having licenced the technology to a number of centralised plants, Carbon8 has recently developed a modular, containerised system that is capable of being deployed directly on-site and can be integrated into existing industrial processes. The first successful demonstration of this system took place in Toronto, Ontario in 2018.

Wright Engineering has provided its skill and expertise to Carbon8 throughout the design and manufacturing process and further demonstrated its engineering versatility being involved in such a specialised project.
